Understanding PBSP Therapy
What is PBSP Therapy?
The Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor (PBSP) is a form of therapy that helps people heal emotional wounds through the body’s natural capacity for connection, imagination, and meaning.
By creating new, corrective experiences, PBSP helps you reimagine the past in ways that bring safety, fulfilment, and peace to the immediate present.
One of the most powerful PBSP experiences is through Ideal Parents, (invented) imagined figures who meet the deepest emotional needs that were once left unmet.
The healing power of Ideal Parents
Children thrive when their emotional needs are met.
Yet many of us grew up without consistent love, protection, or belonging.
So, we ask:
Would your life have been different if you had Ideal Parents?
And,
Can imagining them now help you heal?
Our brains constantly draw on memories to guide how we live. Painful ones tend to stick, shaping how we see ourselves and what we expect from life.
PBSP helps rewrite those old emotional maps through a process called memory reconsolidation, a brief window when a memory becomes flexible and open to change.
During a PBSP session, you may be invited to revisit an old scene and imagine a new outcome. An Ideal Parent might offer the comfort, protection, or understanding you never received.
Through vivid imagery, movement, and carefully chosen language on the part of the therapist, your body begins to feel what safety, warmth, and belonging truly are.
As these new experiences take root, your brain forms new neural pathways and a new inner story emerges:
If I had experienced Ideal Parents, I would have been okay, perhaps even happy.
From here, life begins to expand. You start to move beyond survival and experience the fruits of living: pleasure, meaning, satisfaction, and connection.
A new way forward
It's important to understand that you do not have to stay bound to your past. PBSP offers a path to feeling fully seen, supported, and loved, perhaps for the first time in your life.
If you’re ready to move from simply getting by to truly living, I’d be honored to walk with you on that journey.
Understanding healing through the PBSP framework
PBSP offers a powerful way to understand how our early experiences shape who we have become and how healing can occur when unmet needs are finally met in the imagination and the body.
In this short video, I explore the PBSP concept of shape and counter-shape as a doorway to understanding how the therapy works, why it’s effective, and how it helps restore balance, connection, and wholeness.
The Levang Inventory of Family Experiences (LIFE) Assessment explores your childhood memories and how your basic developmental needs were met, partially met, or unmet.
Grounded in the Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor (PBSP) approach, LIFE helps you see how early experiences shape the lens through which you view yourself and the world.
When our core developmental needs are met, we grow into our most authentic, congruent selves. By understanding where those needs were supported, and where they were not, you can begin to live with greater awareness, compassion, and freedom.
This powerful self-reflective tool offers an opportunity to move beyond old patterns and live more fully connected to pleasure, meaning, satisfaction, and the richness of being truly alive.
